TRA’S NEW CUSTOMS PROCEDURES TO ENHANCE TIMELY CLEARANCE OF FUEL
30 March, 2026
The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has introduced a new pre-tax clearance procedure for fuel, requiring taxes on petrol and diesel to be paid before products are released to the market. The move is already improving distribution efficiency and ensuring that consumers receive fuel on time.
Under this procedure, fuel owners settle their tax obligations in advance, allowing smooth entry of products into the market while maintaining regulatory compliance. The system is designed to minimize delays, enhance transparency, and make fuel supply more predictable for both businesses and customers.
TRA Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, visited several major fuel depots in Dar es Salaam, including Camel Oil, Moil Energies, and Mount Meru, to observe the procedure in action. He praised the initiative for easing distribution and strengthening oversight while creating a business-friendly environment.
Facility operators confirmed that fuel stocks remain sufficient and highlighted that the pre-tax system allows them to deliver products to the market efficiently. They also noted that it supports exports to neighboring countries while ensuring domestic demand is met.
Mr. Mwenda emphasized that TRA will continue to enhance services for taxpayers, including round-the-clock operations, and encouraged industry players to communicate with the Authority whenever challenges arise. The new system marks a significant step toward modernizing tax administration and ensuring timely, reliable fuel supply.
