TRA STRENGTHENS EFFORTS TO PROTECT LOCAL INDUSTRIES, EXPAND TAX BASE
19 May, 2026
The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting local industries as part of broader efforts to expand the country’s tax base and support sustainable economic growth.
Speaking on May 18, 2026, during a meeting with the Managing Director of Mount Meru Group, Mr. Atul Mittal, held at TRA Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda said the Authority continues to implement various measures aimed at safeguarding domestic manufacturers, including intensified efforts to combat the illegal importation of goods into the country.
Mr. Mwenda highlighted that TRA places high value on the significant contribution made by local industries to government revenue and remains committed to ensuring a fair and competitive business environment for compliant investors. He commended Mount Meru Group for its investment in the edible oil sector and for consistently demonstrating voluntary tax compliance, while encouraging other businesses to adopt the same spirit in supporting national development through timely tax payments.
During the discussions, Mr. Mittal commended TRA’s ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of edible oil products, describing the initiative as vital in protecting local industries, safeguarding government revenue, and promoting fair competition in the market.
He further observed that strengthened enforcement measures against smuggling continue to reinforce the growth of nearly 4,000 edible oil processing industries operating across the country, while also enhancing consumer safety and public health protection. Mr. Mittal also commended TRA for maintaining a predictable and stable tax system that enables taxpayers to effectively plan and meet their annual tax obligations.
