25 March, 2026
The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has said that the Authority has started taking steps toward implementing a new procedure for importing edible oil intoTanzania Mainland from Zanzibar.
Speaking during a visit by the Budget Committee of the Zanzibar House of Representatives on March 24, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Commissioner General Mwenda said that among the steps already taken is the formation of a technical subcommittee. This team includes representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture through the Cereals and Other Produce Board, customs officials, and edible oil importers, with the aim of establishing a system that will soon be used for importing the product.
He said that the new procedure aims to facilitate edible oil trade between Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, as well as boost business activities in the ports of Bagamoyo, Mbweni, and Kunduchi, which are commonly used for importing the commodity.
“We will provide tax relief on edible oil entering Tanzania Mainland from Zanzibar to enable importers to make profits, ensure the Government collects revenue, and protect local industries,” said Mr. Mwenda.
Commissioner General Mwenda also warned traders who may engage in smuggling once the new system is implemented that the Government will not hesitate to take legal action against them.
On the other hand, he emphasized that TRA will continue to provide tax education to the public and facilitate trade between Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar by ensuring that everyone who is required to pay taxes fulfills their obligations.
On his part, the Chairperson of the Budget Committee of the Zanzibar House of Representatives, Hon. Ali Suleiman Ameir, congratulated TRA for its accountability and pledged continued cooperation in educating the public on the importance of paying taxes.
