TRA AND URA TO COLLABORATE IN COMBATING TAX EVASION

25 March, 2026

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) have agreed to collaborate in combating tax evasion by curbing smuggling activities occurring between the two countries.

Speaking during a visit by URA officials to Tanzania, led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Emmanuel Katonge, at a meeting held at TRA offices in Dar es Salaam on March 25, 2026, the Commissioner General of TRA, Yusuph Juma Mwenda, said that through cooperation, the two countries can effectively curb smuggling.

He said that TRA has maintained a long-standing good relationship with URA in operations, including the exchange of information.

He also warned dishonest rice traders who import rice into Uganda while falsely claiming it originates from Tanzania, stating that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.

Furthermore, Commissioner General Mwenda said that TRA will continue to facilitate trade between the two countries, including enabling the presence of URA officers within the Customs department.

On his part, the Chairman of the URA Board, Emmanuel Katonge, said they will continue working closely with TRA on tax matters and in preventing the importation of prohibited goods into both countries.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner General of URA, John Musinguzi Rujoki, said that URA and TRA have been sharing various strategies aimed at expanding the tax base and increasing tax contribution to national revenue.

He added that both URA and TRA benefit from their cooperation through the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and human resources.
