NEW TRA EMPLOYEES WARNED AGAINST ENGAGING IN CORRUPTION

09 June, 2025

The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has warned newly recruited TRA employees against engaging in corrupt practices in the course of performing their daily duties. Instead, he urged them to work diligently while adhering to the ethics of public service.

Speaking on June 6, 2025, during the closing ceremony of the induction training for 1,896 new TRA employees held at the Lugalo Golf Grounds in Dar es Salaam, Commissioner General Mwenda stated that it is the expectation of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, that this large number of new recruits will bring about a transformation within TRA by increasing the number of taxpayers and overall tax collections.

He mentioned that President Samia decided to add 300 more new employees, bringing the total to 1,896, to enable TRA to continue excelling in tax collection. He warned the new employees not to engage in unethical behavior that could tarnish the good image TRA has built over the years.

“Your appointment to work at TRA was based on each individual’s merit. You are witnesses that the recruitment process was rigorous and thorough, our aim was to find the right people, and we believe we have found them. Therefore, we expect accountability from you. If any of you engage in unethical behavior, we will not tolerate it. We will take disciplinary action regardless of your background, circumstances, or qualifications,” said Commissioner General Mwenda.

He emphasized that it is the duty of TRA staff to increase the number of taxpayers by registering more people across the country. That is why the Government hired a large number of staff to reach more taxpayers in every corner of Tanzania.

“I expect you to increase public education and voluntary tax compliance. Carry out your responsibilities knowing that taxpayers are the backbone of TRA. Businesspeople are not enemies of TRA, so you must offer them quality service and listen to their challenges,” Commissioner General Mwenda added.

In another hand, Commissioner General Mwenda gave a two weeks deadline for employees who have not yet reported to work to do so. Otherwise, their positions will be filled by other candidates from the TRA database, including 118 government employees.

Earlier, when welcoming the Commissioner General, the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Mr. Moshi Jonathan Kabengwe, said the TRA leadership has high expectations that the new employees will be productive in their work.

He urged each employee to put effort into fulfilling their duties and to continuously improve their knowledge and skills, regardless of their work environment, emphasizing that it is each employee’s responsibility to add value to themselves.

On behalf of the new recruits, Mr. Maximilian Gabriel stated that they are ready to work in any region within the United Republic of Tanzania.

End.
