04 May, 2026
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for its strong performance and efficiency in tax administration, noting significant progress in boosting voluntary tax compliance and increasing government revenue collections during the 2025/26 financial year.
The commendation was delivered by an IMF delegation led by Mr. Nicolas Blancher during a meeting with TRA’s leadership, represented by Deputy Commissioner General Mr. Mcha Hassan Mcha, held on May 4, 2026, at the Authority’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
During the discussions, the IMF delegation highlighted TRA’s consistent efforts in strengthening tax systems, which have contributed to greater stability in revenue collection and a noticeable reduction in taxpayer complaints—an achievement the delegation described as highly commendable.
The IMF further expressed its readiness to deepen cooperation with TRA by supporting capacity-building initiatives for its staff across key areas. These include tax administration in the manufacturing and industrial sectors, as well as strategies to effectively formalize the informal economy.
In addition, the IMF pledged support in enhancing TRA’s capabilities in customs laboratory operations and in implementing strategic initiatives aimed at further improving voluntary tax compliance.
On his part, Deputy Commissioner General Mr. Mcha Hassan Mcha expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continued support, emphasizing that the partnership will play a vital role in strengthening staff competencies and improving service delivery to taxpayers.
He noted that capacity building remains a critical area for TRA and acknowledged the long-standing and productive relationship between the IMF and the Authority, which has consistently contributed to improved institutional performance
