DRY PORTS TO OPERATE 24 HOURS

23 February, 2026

The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has directed all owners and operators of Inland Container Depots (ICDs) in the country to begin operating 24 hours a day in order to align with the pace of Customs service delivery.

Speaking on February 19, 2026, in Dar es Salaam during a joint meeting with ICD owners, Commissioner General Mwenda said that 24-hour operations will further facilitate trade, reduce cargo congestion, and that they are ready to support the implementation of this arrangement. He noted that Customs officers have already started working 24 hours.

He stated that he recognizes the importance of ICDs and their contribution to tax revenue collection, as they have been enabling and facilitating both domestic and international trade.

"I urge you to ensure that you increase efficiency in your operations by organizing yourselves to provide services for 24 hours. As TRA, we will provide our staff, and on your part, you should prepare the necessary equipment and other requirements. The goal is to enhance efficiency," Mwenda said.

He added that the efficiency of dry ports goes hand in hand with the efficiency of Customs; therefore, it is the responsibility of owners to cooperate with TRA to improve overall performance. He also commended them for the good work they are doing.

In another development, Commissioner General Mwenda warned against tax evasion practices carried out by some dry port owners, emphasizing that TRA has information regarding such activities and will not hesitate to take action.

"I am aware that there is tax evasion within some ICDs. This is unacceptable. All ICDs must comply with the law. We must work together to ensure that ICDs are seen as secure and compliant. We will not hesitate to take action against those found guilty," Mwenda emphasized.

Earlier, speaking at the same meeting, the President of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), Ms. Angelina Ngalula, said that dry port operators are an important link in the economy toward achieving the National Vision 2050 and should unite and actively participate in building the country’s economy by bringing about positive transformation.
