CG MWENDA INAUGURATES TRA UNITED BOARD
21 February, 2026
The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, on February 18, 2026, at the TRA offices in Dar es Salaam, inaugurated the Board of Directors of the football team “TRA United Sports Club” and urged them to fully oversee the team and make it competitive and formidable in both domestic and international leagues.
Among other directives, he emphasized the importance of enforcing discipline within the team so that it becomes a model club compared to other teams participating in various leagues in the country.
He said that TRA’s intention in establishing the team, apart from providing entertainment, is to deliver a message to citizens about the importance of voluntary tax compliance, which is the foundation of the country’s economic growth. He expressed optimism that the formation of the Board would yield positive results in this regard.
“We have formed this team because our main objective is to link TRA’s mandate with the direct participation of citizens in understanding the importance of paying taxes voluntarily. Therefore, I believe that as a Board, you will do everything possible to ensure that citizens see paying taxes as their responsibility and nothing else,” said Mwenda.
He noted the importance of sports in the country and stated that through the team and the newly formed Board, their expectation is to set an example in the sports sector, including ensuring that players, especially foreign players, contribute taxes from the salaries they earn.
Commissioner Mwenda added that in order to achieve the goals of Vision 2050, TRA, as the engine driving the country’s revenue growth ambitions, has a duty to utilize various revenue collection avenues, including the sports sector. He believes that if the Board applies professionalism in managing the team, they will achieve the intended goals.
On his part, the Chairman of the ‘TRA United’ Board, Edmund Kawamala, commended Commissioner Mwenda for his initiative to establish the team, which he expects will become one of the most formidable football clubs on the African continent.
He said that as a Board, they will ensure they do everything possible to use the team as a platform to deliver tax education to citizens, noting that a large percentage of Tanzanians love sports, and therefore through ‘TRA United,’ citizens will receive tax education.
In addition to Chairman Edmund Kawamala, the ‘TRA United’ Board includes eight other members: former Secretary General of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Dr. Wilfred Kidao; Chairperson of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation, Angelina Ngalula; Juma Kisongo; Kamna Shomari; Zahoro Salum; Paul Walalaze; and Elikunda Mndeme, who are TRA employees. The final board position is expected to be filled at any time.Top of Form
