24 September, 2026

The Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has called for strengthened regional cooperation among tax administrations of East African Community (EAC) Partner States to jointly address tax administration challenges, enhance revenue collection and facilitate trade across the region.

CG Mwenda made the call on 24 June 2026 while participating virtually in the 54th Meeting of the East African Revenue Authorities Commissioners General (EARACGS), where he underscored the importance of sharing information, experiences and best practices, strengthening domestic tax administration systems, and enhancing joint efforts to combat smuggling.

He also emphasised the need to improve customs services and expedite cargo clearance at border points to facilitate cross-border trade. He further highlighted the importance of cooperation among Partner States in addressing challenges related to the implementation of the common tariff regime and strengthening revenue collection across the region.

The 54th EARACGS Meeting discussed the performance of revenue authorities during the 2025/26 financial year, taxation of the informal sector, alternative mechanisms for resolving tax disputes outside the courts, as well as revenue collection in the digital economy and taxation of digital assets.
